Recruitment of JRF for SEAWEED CULTIVATION PROGRAM GUJARAT COAST
Introduction Seaweeds are simple plants of the sea. They are primitive plants without root and shoot system and widely distributed in the oceans from the tidal level to considerable depths, floating freely or attached to substrate with hold fast. Seaweeds are wonder plants of the sea since they are efficient converters of solar energy through constant nourishment of the surrounding seawater and some of them grow faster than anything on earth. In the sunlit surface wasters of the sea they grow 14 to 16 times their original weight during a 45days growth period. Therefore, wet farming is getting extended to the vast areas of the open oceans.
Seaweeds are popularly called “Sea vegetables” and rich in minerals and vitamins.
Therefore, seaweeds are considered as medical food of the 21st century. They also provide a strong base for growth promoters of several plants and expected to be the major source of biofertilizers to start organic agricultural revolution in the century.
Seaweeds are found to be one of the major source of bioactive compounds and have yielded molecules for anti- HIV drugs and other dreadful disease. Seaweed products such as agar, align and carrageenan have innumerous applications in the food, beverages, pharmaceutical, chemical, cosmetic and textile industries.
Seaweeds have been in talks after the Tsunami, that brought in massive destruction in India. Under the schemes for rehabilitation of the coastal poor, self-help groups were formed, and coastal poor were trained to grow and process seaweeds, to earn a sizable living of INR 10,000/- per family per month. The techno-economic feasibility of this activity has been proven beyond doubt on the Tamil Nadu coast.
Gaps The Gujarat coast has been studied for the varsity of seaweeds, and nearly 153 species of seaweeds are found on this coast. Many of these seaweeds are indigenous to this
coast, and some of them are also seasonal drifts on to the shores of Gujarat. Data is available about the types of seaweeds on the coast of Gujarat, but, the R&D initiatives on
various aspects of these seaweeds, to reap the best benefits of seaweeds needs to be taken up.
Seaweed cultivation of Kappaphycus sp. has been undertaken on the Tamil Nadu coast of India, and the results have been extremely encouraging. The cultivation program has been able to provide an extra income of Rs. 10,000/- per family, or more, and  thisbrought a relief post tsunami effects. However, other indigenous species of seaweeds
are yet to be tested for their cultivability and utility.
Kappaphycus cultivation needs, access to seed material, a thorough understanding of its cultivation practice, technique of harvesting, quality control, storage, networking with other relevant agencies for marketing, selling etc. Once the basic culture is established and one or two cycles are over, the individuals can undertake the process repetitively and successive cycles. The technique is simple but needs continuous monitoring. It also needs awareness about potential, market and uses of seaweeds amongst the coastal farmers.
Experience & pilot project GSBTM has started promotion of Kappaphycus on Gujarat coast from 2010. The results on few of the sites have been very encouraging, and GSBTM intends to scale up this activity at other sites. It includes screening of various coastal sites in Gujarat, for assessing the possibilities of kappaphycus cultivation.
Project GSBTM believes that Kappaphycus cultivation initiatives on the Gujarat coast might be of great importance and success. It would help supplementary income source for the coastal poor and help enhance the living standard at the lowest level. GSBTM also intends to evaluate and establish the techno-economic feasibility of Seaweed Cultivation on Gujarat coast, through this extension program, apart from promoting income generation for the coastal poor.
GSBTM is attempting to address the vast area of seaweed research, in a wholesome manner. The proposed approach is as below:
Sr. No. Problem category Problem/ issue
1. Short term ( 1-3 years)
Identifying newer sites along the Gujarat coast, to promote cultivation Scaling up cultivation at promising sites
The project work would include: 1. Selection of new sites along the Gujarat coast for Kappaphycus cultivation
2. Networking with the local fishermen to conduct experimental studies
3. Floating of 1-5 experimental rafts for Kappaphycus, at the selected site(s) with help of the GSBTM Resource Person and local fishermen
4. Constant interaction with the fishermen for supervision of the experimental projects
5. Scale up of the cultivation activity at all the feasible sitesThe job responsibilities of the
Field Officer
1. Travelling across the Gujarat coast to identify feasible sites for Kappaphycus cultivation
2. Staying at site for execution of experimental projects
3. Networking with local fishermen to conduct experimental projects
4. Assistance to conduct literature survey and developing experimental project for seaweed cultivation of newer species
5. Overall co-ordination of the program
Eligibility of Applicant M.Sc. Biotechnology/Microbiology/Biochemistry or M.E. Biotech.
Fluency in spoken Gujarati.
Readiness to travel extensively all over the Gujarat coast and stay in rural accommodations.
Salary Structure INR 14,400/- consolidated
Last date for receipt of Application 8th July, 2014. Application has to reach in 6 copies, with one copy of self attested certificates.
