At University of Hyderabad, we are having a vibrant group on Tomato Functional
Genomics, which is working on TILLING (Targeting Induced Local Lesions IN Genomes), Insertional Mutagenesis, proteomics and fruit ripening in tomato. Some of the current aims of the group include using reverse genetics to isolate tomato mutants delayed in ripening, having high lycopene and folate content in tomato fruits and analysis of light and hormonal signal transduction pathways. For recent publications of the group see (Plant Physiol 156: 1424- 1438; Molecular Plant 3: 854-869; Plant Methods 6: 3; Plant Methods 5:18; Plant Signaling and Behavior 5:11.).
Currently we have following research associate position available under “Tomato Metabolome Network” (ToMaNet) funded by Dept of Biotechnology under following project entitled “Biofortification of tomato by targeted manipulation of the biosynthetic pathways” under supervision of Prof. R.P. Sharma, at Dept of Plant Sciences, School of Life Sciences, University of Hyderabad. The research associate would be offered fellowships of 24,000/- pm + HRA. The qualification for the Research Associate Position is as follows:
Research Associate III: Applicants should have experience in bioinformatics for
handling genome sequencing/proteome/metabolite analyses and application should be supported by publications. PhD in Bioinformatics is required.

TATA Fellowship

TATA Innovation Fellowship: 2012–13
Applications are invited for ‘Tata Innovation Fellowship’, a highly competitive scheme instituted by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt of India to recognize and reward scientists with outstanding track record in biological sciences and a deep commitment to find innovative solutions to major problems in health care, agriculture and other areas related to life sciences and biotechnology.
Objective
The scheme is aimed at rewarding interdisciplinary work where major emphasis is on innovation and translational research with a potential towards commercialization.
Eligibility
(i) The fellowship is open to Indian Nationals residing in India who are below the age of 55 years as on 21 November 2012.
(ii) The applicant should possess a Ph.D. degree in Life Sciences, Agriculture, Veterinary Science or a Master’s degree in Medical Sciences, Engineering or an equivalent degree in Biotechnology/ related areas. The applicant must have put in several years of work in the specific area.
(iii) The candidate must have a regular position in a University/Institute/Organization and should be engaged in research and development. If he/she is availing any other fellowship, he/she will have to opt for only one of the fellowships.
(iv) The applicant should have spent at least 5 years in India before applying for the fellowship.
Nature of support
(i) The amount of the fellowship is Rs 20,000 per month in addition to regular salary from the host institute. If an awardee is receiving salary from international organization, he will be entitled for research grant, i.e. contingency only.
(ii) In addition, each Fellow will receive a contingency grant of Rs 5 lakh per annum for meeting the expenses on consumables, equipment, international and domestic travel, manpower and other contingent expenditure to be incurred in connection with the implementation of ongoing research project under the fellowship.
(iii) The Tata Innovation Fellows would be eligible for other regular research grant(s) through extramural and other research schemes of various S&T agencies of the Government of India.
Host institution
(i) The candidate will continue to work at the place of his/her employment.
(ii) The Institution where the candidate is working would provide the necessary infrastructure and administrative support for pursuing the research under this fellowship.
Number Number of fellowships is 5 per year.
Duration The duration of the fellowship will be initially for three years, extendable further by two years on a fresh appraisal.

Applications are invited for a project assistant position in the Wellcome Trust/DBT India Alliance sponsored project entitled “Genetic analysis of crossover assurance mechanisms facilitating meiotic chromosome segregation”.

Qualifications: Master’s degree in either Bioinformatics / Computational Biology/ Computer Science / Computer applications with minimum of 55% marks.

JRF for antimalarial drug Discovery Project on “Discovering Antimalarials from Marine Organisms (phase III): Bulk Recollection of Promising Marine Organisms-Isolation, Purification, Characterization and Chemical Synthesis of Marine derived Antimalarials
This multi institutional DBT project will use state of the art activity guided HPLC purification of antiplasmodial molecules derived from extracts of marine organisms. Screening of extracts and purified molecules will be done in microtiter plate format by ex vivo culture of Plasmodium falciparum strains in human red blood cells and inhibition of growth of malaria parasite will be monitored by SYBR Green based Fluorescence screen. Selectivity Indices will be determined by comparing IC50 (Mammalian cell)/IC50 (P.falciparum).
