JRF and PhD at ACTREC

Applications are invited, in the prescribed form, for the award of JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS (JRFs) for doing PhD studies in Life Sciences at Tata Memorial Centre.

The Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) is an autonomous Grant-in-aid Institution of the Department of Atomic Energy. The TMC is comprised of the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC) and the Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH). The TMC conducts Ph.D. program in Life Sciences and is affiliated to the Homi Bhabha National Institute (Deemed University). On-going research at TMC includes basic and translational work in the field of Cancer Cell Biology. Specific research topics includes study of cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, metastasis, tumor immunology, immunotherapy, virology, chemotherapy, and carcinogenesis, gene therapy in animal models, tumor markers, structural biology, proteomics, genomics, genetics, microbiology and biochemistry.

Qualifications: Master’s degree in: Applied Biology/ Botany/ Biochemistry/ Biophysics/ Biotechnology/ Life Sciences/ Microbiology/ Molecular Biology/ Zoology; or M.B.B.S. from a recognized University, with not less than 60% aggregate marks. Those awaiting results may also apply.

Stipend: Rs.12000/- + 30% HRA per month as applicable, if Hostel facility not allotted.

Limited Hostel facility is available on the ACTREC campus on first come, first served basis.

HOW TO APPLY

Candidates must first fill out their applications ONLINE [click here to apply online]. Thereafter the candidate must print out a copy their application form, sign it and mail the printed application along with a Demand Draft for Rs. 300/- drawn in favor of TMC-ACTREC (no fee for SC/ ST/ PH candidates provided there is supporting documents) along with all the enclosures (as mentioned in the application form) to the Senior Administrative Officer, Tata Memorial Centre, Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research & Education in Cancer, Kharghar, Navi Mumbai – 410 210 latest by 19th April 2010.

Failure to follow these instructions strictly will result in disqualification.

The names of the candidates eligible for written examination will be displayed on the ACTREC website by 7th May 2010.

An ‘Objective Type’ Written Exam will be held on Sunday 13th June 2010 at 10.30 a.m. at Bharati Vidyapeeth’s Institute of Technology, Opp. Kharghar Station, Sector 7, Belpada, CBD, Navi Mumbai - 400 614.

Names of candidates qualifying in the written exam will be displayed at the: (i) ACTREC website, (ii) Examination Centre, and (iii) ACTREC Security Gate after 5.00 p.m. on 14th June 2010. Interviews will be held on 15th, 16th and 17th June 2010 at ACTREC.

Candidates who have already secured a PhD research fellowship from CSIR/ UGC/ ICMR/ DBT or other agencies and are interested in doing their PhD in Life Sciences at TMC need not appear for the written exam. However they must fill out the online form and their printed applications along with all the enclosures must reach ACTREC by 19th April 2010. All such candidates who meet the eligibility requirements will be invited to appear for an interview in the second week of June 2010 at ACTREC. The list of eligible candidates will be displayed on the ACTREC website by 7th May 2010. Applicants who receive fellowship award after 19th April 2010 must send proof to the Centre by e-mail [jrf2010@actrec.gov.in] and seek an interview date.

The TMC reserves the right to increase the minimum eligibility requirements to a higher percentage of marks in qualifying exam, in case of receipt of large number of applications.

A list of research projects in life sciences that can be offered to PhD students at TMC Centre is displayed on the ACTREC website. Candidates are encouraged to interact with investigators whose names and e-mail IDs have been indicated against the respective projects, for more information.
