Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology, USA

The Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO) awards Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology to recent recipients of the doctoral degree for research and training in selected areas of biology supported by BIO and with special goals for human resource development in biology. The fellowships encourage independence at an early stage of the research career to permit Fellows to pursue their research and training goals in the most appropriate research locations regardless of the availability of funding for the Fellows at that site. For FY 2010, these BIO programs are (1) Broadening Participation in Biology and (2) Biological Informatics.

In future years, these areas will change as new scientific and infrastructure opportunities present themselves; and this solicitation will be changed to reflect the areas being funded. The fellowships are also designed to provide active mentoring of the Fellows by the sponsoring scientists who will benefit from having these talented young scientists in their research groups. The research and training plan of each fellowship must address important scientific questions in contemporary biology within the scope of the BIO Directorate and the specific guidelines in this fellowship program solicitation. Because the fellowships are offered only to postdoctoral scientists early in their careers, doctoral advisors are encouraged to discuss the availability of BIO fellowships with their graduate students early in their doctoral programs. Fellowships are awards to individuals, not institutions, and are administered by the Fellows.

Scholarship for PhD Positions

Ph.D. Position in Plant Developmental Genetics/Genomics at Trinity College Dublin

Description : A Ph.D. position is available for up to four years in the Department of Genetics at Trinity College Dublin. Our laboratory is interested in how plant development is controlled by the regulation of gene expression and protein stability. The Ph.D. thesis project will focus on the characterization of transcriptional regulation by components of the ubiquitin system in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. To this end, a combination of state-of-the-art molecular genetics and genome-wide methods such as microarray analysis and ultra high-throughput sequencing will be used. We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a strong background and interest in molecular biology and/or biochemistry and/or plant biology, who is able to work independently, but yet enjoys working in a team. The ideal applicant should have previous experience with key techniques of molecular biology and/or biochemistry and/or plant biology. Basic knowledge of bioinformatics is an advantage but not a must.

The “Better Opportunities for Young Scientists in Chosen Areas of Science & Technology
(BOYSCAST)” programme of the Department of Science & Technology (DST) provides opportunities to the young Indian scientists/technologists to visit institutions abroad, interact with scientists/technologists there, get trained in latest research techniques and conduct R&D in specially chosen frontline areas of
science & technology.

Applications are invited from Indian Nationals for the award of fellowships under the BOYSCAST programme for conducting advanced research and undergoing training in advanced research techniques in overseas research laboratories/institutes, in chosen frontline areas of science & technology for the period of three to twelve months. NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

CENTRAL SCHEME OF SCHOLARSHIP FOR COLLEGE AND UNIVESITY STUDENTS

The National Merit Scholarship Scheme, the objective of which was to provide financial assistance to Meritorious students studying at Post-matric to Post-graduate level in Government Schools/Colleges and Universities has been discontinued with effect from April, 2007. However, a New Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University Students has been introduced during XI Five Year Plan. The objective of the new scheme is to provide financial assistance to meritorious students from low income families to meet a part of their day-to-day expenses while pursuing higher studies.

The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of the results of senior secondary examination. 82000 fresh scholarships per annum [41000 for boys and 41000 for girls] will be awarded for graduate/postgraduate studies in colleges and universities and for professional courses, such as Medical, Engineering etc.

SCHEME OF SCHOLARSHIP TO STUDENTS FROM NON-HINDI SPEAKING STATES FOR POST MATRIC STUDIES IN HINDI

The Scheme was started in 1955-56 with the objectives to encourage the study of Hindi in Non-Hindi Speaking States and to make available to the Government of these States, suitable personnel to man teaching and other posts where knowledge of Hindi is essential. The Scheme was revised from 2004-2005. Under the revised Scheme, 2500 Scholarships are provided to meritorious students studying at post-matric to Ph.D. level, for recognized fulltime courses of education for study of Hindi as one of the subjects on the basis of the results of “examinations next below” conducted by a Board of Education or a University or a Voluntary Hindi Organisation. The rate of Scholarship ranges from Rs.300/- to 1000/- per month depending upon the course stage of study. This scheme is implemented through the State Governments/UT Administrations.
