1. M. Sc./ B. Tech. in any discipline of science for JRF and M. Sc./ B. Tech. in any discipline of science with two years research experience for SRF.

2. Working/ handling/ research experience in advanced sophisticated instruments like Scanning Electron Microscope with experience in TEM and SEM sample preparation; X-ray Diffractometer (XRD) for protein crystallography and macromolecules and handling of XRD protein crystallization Unit; Confocal microscope and Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) Spectrometer.

3. Knowledge of Imaging/ physical Chemistry/ protein crystallography is desirable.

Salary: For JRF Rs. 12000/- + HRA as permissible; for SRF Rs. 14000/- + HRA as permissible.

Beginning in the winter semester 2009/2010 the Research School in Biology "From embryo to old age: the cell biology and genetics of health and disease“ will be offering a high-level Ph.D. programme for students with excellent qualifications. The participating research groups use most of today's microbial, plant and animal model systems to investigate cell biological and genetic mechanisms whose perturbation during the life cycle of an organism results in disease. Intensive cooperations across traditional departmental and discipline borders and the commitment to excellence in all aspects of genetical research provide optimal conditions for the individual Ph.D. student.

The three-year Ph.D. programme reflects the increasing importance of interdisciplinarity in research and provides comprehensive training for scientific, methodological and "soft" skills. Each student is individually guided by his/her thesis committee, allowing the completion of a demanding research project in the shortest possible time. Applications are invited, in the prescribed form, for the award of JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS (JRFs) for doing PhD studies in Life Sciences at Tata Memorial Centre.

The Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) is an autonomous Grant-in-aid Institution of the Department of Atomic Energy. The TMC is comprised of the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC) and the Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH). The TMC conducts Ph.D. program in Life Sciences and is affiliated to the Homi Bhabha National Institute (Deemed University). On-going research at TMC includes basic and translational work in the field of Cancer Cell Biology. Specific research topics includes study of cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, metastasis, tumor immunology, immunotherapy, virology, chemotherapy, and carcinogenesis, gene therapy in animal models, tumor markers, structural biology, proteomics, genomics, genetics, microbiology and biochemistry.

Qualifications: Master’s degree in: Applied Biology/ Botany/ Biochemistry/ Biophysics/ Biotechnology/ Life Sciences/ Microbiology/ Molecular Biology/ Zoology; or M.B.B.S. from a recognized University, with not less than 60% aggregate marks. Those awaiting results may also apply.

Stipend: Rs.12000/- + 30% HRA per month as applicable, if Hostel facility not allotted.

Candidates who have already secured a PhD research fellowship from CSIR/ UGC/ ICMR/ DBT or other agencies and are interested in doing their PhD in Life Sciences at TMC need not appear for the written exam. However they must fill out the online form and their printed applications along with all the enclosures must reach ACTREC by 19^th April 2010. All such candidates who meet the eligibility requirements will be invited to appear for an interview in the second week of June 2010 at ACTREC. The list of eligible candidates will be displayed on the ACTREC website by 7^th May 2010. The TMC reserves the right to increase the minimum eligibility requirements to a higher percentage of marks in qualifying exam, in case of receipt of large number of applications.

ELIGIBILITY

First-class in B Sc degree under 10+2+3 years system as indicated below for the various disciplines.

Biological Sciences: B Sc degree or equivalent in Physical, Chemical or Biological Sciences (including Pharmaceutical, Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences).

Chemical Sciences: B Sc degree or equivalent with Chemistry as one of the main subjects associated with Mathematics at PUC (Plus 2) level.

Physical Sciences: B Sc degree or equivalent with Physics as a main subject.

Ph D in Science: All the Science departments as indicated in (i) except High Energy Physics and Solid State & Structural Chemistry.

Qualifications remain the same as for the regular candidates. Apart from that the candidates should have two years of continuous service in a permanent position in the current organisation • Age: NOT higher than 40 years as on 01.04.2010.

Desirable: Qualifying in one of the tests;IISc Entrance Test,CSIR-UGC NET for JRF,UGC-NET for JRF, DBT JRF,ICMR JRF, GATE,NBHM, etc.
